UPSC Mains

The UPSC Mains is the second and most comprehensive stage of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. It is a written, descriptive exam that tests a candidate’s in-depth knowledge, analytical skills, and ability to express thoughts clearly. Only candidates who qualify for the UPSC Prelims can appear for the UPSC Mains, making it a crucial step towards becoming an IAS, IPS, IFS, or other Group A & B officer.

The UPSC Mains consists of nine papers, out of which seven are considered for merit ranking, while two language papers are qualifying in nature. The papers include:

  • Paper A – Compulsory Indian Language (Qualifying)
  • Paper B – English Language (Qualifying)
  • Paper 1 – Essay
  • Paper 2 – General Studies I (History, Geography, Society)
  • Paper 3 – General Studies II (Polity, Governance, International Relations)
  • Paper 4 – General Studies III (Economy, Science & Tech, Environment, Security)
  • Paper 5 – General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)
  • Paper 6 & 7 – Optional Subject (Two Papers)
